Romney Widens His Reach to 'The 100 Percent'

Mitt Romney sought to repair the damage from his "47 percent" remarks, saying here today he is concerned about the well-being of all voters at a "Meet the Candidate" event sponsored by Univision.

Romney found himself in a defensive crouch this week after a leaked video showed his making disparaging comments about voters of lesser means. He also faced the challenge of appealing to a Latino viewing audience that he has so far struggled to attract during the campaign.

"My campaign is about the 100 percent of America," Romney said in a refrain he would repeat four times during the 45-minute event.

"I know I'm not going to get 100 percent of the vote, and my campaign will focus on those people we think we can bring in to support it," he said. "But this campaign is about helping people who need help."

Romney, 65, was also pressed on the hot-button issue of immigration by Univision anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas at the BankUnited Center Field House on the University of Miami campus.

The candidate emphasized that he would expand legal immigration and said that he wouldn't aggressively pursue undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

"I am not going to be going around the country and rounding them up," he said.

He also criticized President Obama for not taking up an immigration overhaul bill during his first year in the White House, a promise he made to Ramos during the 2008 campaign.

"When I'm president, I will actually do what I promise, I will put in place an immigration reform system that resolves this issue," he said.

But Romney refused to provide more details about how he would handle 1 million-plus young undocumented immigrants who are eligible for a temporary reprieve from deportation under "deferred action," the Obama administration program that is popular among Latino voters.

"For those who are already here and that are undocumented and were brought here by their parents and are therefore illegal aliens in this country, my view is that we should put in place a permanent solution," he said.

When pressed, Romney again insisted that he would not "round up" undocumented people. He said that he would provide a pathway to permanent resident status for undocumented immigrants who pursue military service, but did not say what would happen to those seeking a college degree.

He also stuck by his guns on some of the tougher positions he adopted during the GOP primary, such as "self-deportation" and his support for the Arizona immigration law.

Romney has struggled mightily to attract Latino voters during this campaign. He trails Obama 66-29 percent among Latino registered voters nationwide, according to a Latino Decisions tracking poll released last week.

But Romney appeared before a partisan Republican crowd here at the BankUnited Center. When Ramos grilled him on "self-deportation," the crowd let out an audible groan.

"I have some friends, apparently," Romney said.

Romney Vows to Be President for 'The 100 Percent'

Mitt Romney said three times in the opening 10 minutes of tonight's Univision "Meet the Candidate" forum that his campaign is "about the 100 percent," a clear message to voters who have been swamped with sound bites and video clips that show the candidate's suggesting he wasn't concerned about the nearly half of the country unlikely to vote for him.

"My campaign is about the 100 percent of America," Romney said to the University of Miami crowd. "And I'm concerned about them. Life has become harder for Americans. I know I'm not going to get 100 percent of the vote. And my campaign will focus on the ones who will vote for me. ... I'm convinced that if we take a different course, you'll see incomes rising. I have a record, I've demonstrated my capacity to help the 100 percent."

Faced with some tough questions about immigration, Romney repeated his stance that the best path forward was a wholesale overhaul of the system that would encourage people in the country illegally now to "self-deport" and try to enter again under new laws.

"Do you think you're going to self-deport 11 million immigrants?" Univision anchor Jorge Campos asked pointedly.

"I believe that people make their own choices as to whether they want to go home and that's what I mean by self-deportation," Romney replied, appearing to soften his message from the primary debates, in which self-deportation was forefront in his immigration plan. "People decide whether they want to go back to their country of origin and get in line legally to come to this country. Look, legal immigration is critical to this country. I love legal immigration."

When pressed further on the Arizona law that would require legal immigrants to provide papers in case they're arrested or stopped by police for any reason, Romney declined to take a firm position. At the time of the Supreme Court decision upholding most of the law, Romney would only say that President Obama "has failed to provide any leadership on immigration" and that states deserve the right to craft their own immigration laws when the federal government fails to do so. He said about the same tonight.

The Republican also answered questions about his plan to repeal Obama's health care law. When asked how he felt about the the president and other Democrats' calling him "the grandfather" of the new "Affordable Care Act," Romney laughed.

"I don't think they meant it as a compliment," he said, "but I'll take it. This was during my primary, we thought it might not be helpful."

Democrats have seized on the fact that Romney included an individual mandate -- similar to that in President Obama's law -- in his health care plan during his time as Bay State governor.

Romney also stuck by opposition to same-sex marriage. When asked whether he would react differently if one of his five sons were gay, the candidate said, "My kids are all married, so I'd be surprised."

The appearance on Univision, which will host President Obama in a similar setting Thursday afternoon, marks the beginning of a larger effort to connect with Latino voters, a core group Romney has had trouble swaying in the polls. He spoke at the U.S Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Monday and will campaign across Florida in the coming days.

Romney acknowledged the problem with a quick joke at the beginning of tonight's forum and, of course, during the now infamous, secretly taped fundraiser in Florida.

Aung San Suu Kyi Picks Up Congressional Gold Medal

Four years after being awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was finally able to accept the honor in person today.

"The great honor that you have conferred on me will be a lasting memento of the steadfast support of the United States Congress for the democratic aspirations of my people," she said in the  Capitol's rotunda.

Suu Kyi is celebrated for her defiant pursuit of democracy and human rights in Myanmar, also known as Burma. In 1989, Suu Kyi was put under house arrest by the Burmese government, where she spent 15 of the next 21 years. When Suu Kyi was originally awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2008, she was under house arrest, which makes her the first person ever to receive the award while incarcerated.

"From the depths of my heart, I thank you, the people of America, and you, their representatives, for keeping us in your hearts and minds during the dark years when freedom and justice seemed beyond our reach," she added.

The ceremony brought out the House and Senate's leadership, as well as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former First Lady Laura Bush, who has been an advocate for Burmese human rights. The leaders paid tribute to Suu Kyi for her brave work over the years.

"I might have hoped, but I would never have expected that one day I would have the honor of welcoming my personal hero Aung San Suu Kyi to the congress of the United States," Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., said.

"The woman we honor today chose a far more difficult path," said Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell , R-Ky., "the path of Ghandi, the path of Dr. Martin Luther King … for the sake of future generations she would never know."

Speaker of the House John Boehner, R-Ohio, officially awarded Suu Kyi with the Congressional Gold Medal, and she was welcomed to the podium by a standing ovation.

"This is one of the most moving days of my life," Suu Kyi said. "A house undivided. A house joined together to welcome a stranger from distant land."

While there was mostly a serious and joyous tone to the room there was also laugher. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton noted the Parliament of Burma had been watching the old segments of " The West Wing" to try and learn how to become a Democratic Parliament.

Since her release in November 2010, Suu Kyi has become a Myanmar opposition leader in parliament, and is still active in the human rights of all those in Burma.

"So as we honor her," said Secretary of State Hilary Clinton, "a time that many of us feared that would never happen, it's good to recognize that one phase of her work may be over, but another phase, equally important, is just beginning and that the United States will stand with her."

Suu Kyi is on a 17-day trip to the United States. Tonight she will meet President Obama at the White House.

'View' Co-Hosts May Be 'Sharp Tongued,' But Romney Will Appear on Show

MIAMI – The day after leaked footage from a fundraiser showed presidential candidate Mitt Romney dubbing ABC's "The View" "high risk" due to some of the "sharp tongued" women who host the show, the campaign said today that the candidate is willing to appear on the show in October.

The five women discussed the footage –that same footage that brought us Romney's 47 percent comment —  this morning on the show, with co-host Sherri Shepard using Romney's comments to make an analogy to a football game.

"The thing about it, you know, if I can make a football analogy, this is just preseason," said Shepard. "This is an exhibition game."

"If you can't handle four sharp-tongued women, how are you going to handle the country?" she asked.

In the leaked video, Romney is heard saying that while "The View" is "fine," it is "high risk because of the five women on it, only one is conservative and four are sharp-tongued and not conservative."

But Elisabeth Hasselbeck, the known conservative of the five, said today that she had reached out to the campaign after the remarks and they had confirmed that the Romneys would "love to once more join the sharp-tongued chatter in October."

How Romney Gets Back on Track After '47 Percent'

For Mitt Romney, it's been a brutal start to the fall campaign — unforced errors, a convention bounce for Obama, and grim polls.

Although the Romney campaign will tell you it's not as bad as it looks (and they're probably right), they know they need to turn things around.

Here's what senior Romney advisers tell me is the game plan for the coming weeks. You'll notice no major changes or campaign shake-ups:

- First, Don't Panic. Romney himself sets the tone for the campaign and, as one adviser told me, "He never gets too high; he never gets too low." Romney has seen worse: he faced near death experiences at least twice during the primary (the South Carolina loss, the losses, on the same day, to Santorum in Michigan, Minnesota and Colorado).

- Sharper Message. The campaign is promising a "sharper message" in its upcoming advertising blitz. The message will be economy/jobs, of course, and it will be tailored to each state, each media market. In other words, it will hammer Obama on military cuts in Virginia, coal and manufacturing in Ohio, etc.

- More Intense Schedule. Expect Romney to have "a very intense schedule" in the coming weeks — packed with events in Ohio, Florida, Colorado, Virginia and other key states. This may seem like the obvious thing to do (and it is), but Romney lately has had a strangely light public schedule, with many more closed fundraisers in red states than campaign rallies in battleground states. At one recent Texas fundraiser, I am told, a donor told Romney, "I am happy to write a check, but why are you here? Shouldn't you be in Ohio?"

- The Debates. And, more than anything, they are counting on a strong performance in the debates, especially the first on Oct. 3 in Denver, to pull them ahead of Obama.

How bad does it look? Well, the polls are all over the place. Consider the four national polls out today:

Of course, the battle for 270 electoral votes will be fought in the battleground states and it doesn't look good for Romney there — for the most part, Obama has been holding a steady, but narrow, lead in all of the battleground states.

Marco Rubio Calls Romney's I-Wish-I-Were-Latino Comment: 'A Joke'

In a conference call with reporters Wednesday, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio called Mitt Romney's I-wish-I-were-Latino comment, which came to light in a leaked video tape this week, a "joke."

"I think he meant it as a joke," Rubio said on a conference call organized by the Republican National Committee, adding that's "how most reasonable people would take it."

Romney was shown on a hidden-camera video clip posted by Mother Jones magazine telling his audience at a May 17 fundraiser in Florida about his father's background.

"My dad, you probably know, was the governor of Michigan and was the head of a car company," Romney said. "But he was born in Mexico, and had he been born of Mexican parents, I'd have a better shot at winning this. But he was unfortunately born to Americans living in Mexico. He lived there for a number of years. And, I mean, I say that jokingly, but it would be helpful to be Latino."

As it turns out, Romney made a similar reference — publicly — in January in an interview with Univision's Jorge Ramos

Although Romney's week has been dominated by coverage of the leaked video, he has also been spending  time courting Latino voters. The GOP nominee campaigns in Florida on Wednesday and Thursday, and his campaign has deployed Rubio in a new television ad airing in Florida focused  on Medicare.

When asked whether the Romney-Ryan ticket was on the right course to win on Nov. 6, Rubio said: " I just feel confident about the message we're putting out there."

Rubio also said he sensed "increasing enthusiasm as we get closer to Election Day" and drew a contrast — the same one that Romney campaign officials are seeking to make this week — between what Rubio called the prevailing view of the state of the race inside "the political universe" vs. "out in the rest of the world."

In the "rest of the world," Rubio said, people are "increasingly realizing we can turn this thing around pretty quickly" if we "do a few simple but important things."

"That realization is going to turn into enthusiasm and that  enthusiasm is going to turn into turnout that's going to help us get over the top."

AG Holder Cleared in 'Fast and Furious' Scandal

Operation "Fast and Furious," the controversial undercover operation that allowed U.S. guns to be walked into Mexico, was a "risky strategy" that did not "adequately take into account the significant danger to public safety that it created."

That was the conclusion today from the Office of the Inspector General, Department of Justice, after an investigation that spanned more than a year and a half.

The OIG investigation found that Attorney General Eric Holder was not aware of the strategy and tactics used in "Fast and Furious," and turned up no evidence that Holder or other top DOJ officials tried to cover up the operation, or mislead Congress about it. Holder was held in contempt of Congress earlier this year for allegedly withholding documents about DOJ's "Fast and Furious" investigation from congressional investigators.

In a statement today, Holder said, "It is unfortunate that some were so quick to make baseless accusations before they possessed the facts about these operations -- accusations that turned out to be without foundation and that have caused a great deal of unnecessary harm and confusion."

The political combat triggered by the flawed undercover operation played out in a series of contentious hearings on Capitol Hill in the past year. Behind the battles, the OIG found, was an undercover operation to catch gun-runners on the Southwest border that quickly turned bad.

Some of the 2,000 guns that made their way into Mexico as a result of "Operation Fast and Furious" were later recovered at crime scenes, including two found at the scene of the killing of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry in December 2010.

The "Fast and Furious" strategy called for agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to conduct surveillance and review phone and financial records to track guns they believed to be going to Mexican drug lords, who could then be arrested. But ATF lost track of most of the guns, few arrests were made, and yet "the purchasing activity by Operation Fast and Furious subjects continued unabated, individuals who had engaged in serious and dangerous criminal conduct remained at large, and the public was put in harm's way."

The OIG investigation "revealed a series of misguided strategies, tactics, errors in judgment and management failures that permeated ATF Headquarters and the Phoenix Field Division, as well as the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Arizona and at the Headquarters of the Department of Justice."

The report also details serious mistakes in DOJ's response to congressional inquiries about "Fast and Furious."

The Inspector General's review has recommended 14 Justice Department and ATF officials for disciplinary and administrative review, including the head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division, Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer.

In Presidential Decathlon, Obama is Winning

Presidential campaigns aren't decided on the last day of a race.  They are decided in all the days and moments leading up to Election Day. They turn toward the candidate who puts together a lead going into the final voting in November, and who won or lost the important moments along the way.

In that way, this race in its final months is like a decathlon.  Instead of individual sporting events, it is the combination of 10 moments that determines which candidate has the most points on Nov. 6.

Thus far, I would suggest there are have been five moments of significance. President Obama has either won or tied in each of these, allowing him to build up a small but significant lead.  Polls, when considered as a group, speak to this lead, revealing a race that right now is trending overall (and in all important states) as somewhere between a 1-point and 6-point Obama advantage.  Nearly every poll falls within this range.

I have listened to many Republicans try to point to one poll as indicative of the race and ignore all the other data available. This is what I call confirmation bias.  It is when we ignore information that runs counter to what we want to hear and we look for information that confirms what we desire.  It happens all the time – in politics, and in life.

They'll need to abandon that tendency if they aim to win any of the important moments coming up in the next seven weeks.

Let's look at five moments already conducted, then the five moments still on the horizon.

So far, Romney basically tied in his best event, which was picking a vice-presidential nominee - Paul Ryan.  He spent 10 days talking about something other than the economy and ended up with little to no bump.  His next best event was the Republican convention, and at best you can say he tied this.  The biggest take away was from a fading actor, Clint Eastwood, talking to an empty chair.

The next event on the calendar was the Democratic convention, and President Obama won this going away, and ended up getting a pretty good bounce from it.  Though the bounce didn't completely last, it did settle into a pretty important 3-point lead.

Interestingly, the next two moments in the campaign were spontaneous  ones that no one could have predicted.  First was the Libyan tragedy and violence. In this case, the public judged Obama to have handled the crisis calmly and effectively while Mitt Romney's precipitous statements were viewed by many voters negatively.  An Obama win in this event.

Another unpredictable moment came with the release and coverage of a tape of Romney at a fundraiser in which the candidate talked disapprovingly of 47 percent of the country — an unforced error but a Romney loss in this event.

So we are left with five events to come that include three presidential debates in October, one vice-presidential debate, and an unpredictable moment.

In order for Romney and his campaign to get back in this race and have a chance on Election Day, they are going to have to win convincingly at least three of these remaining five moments.  And with voting already beginning early in many states, Romney is probably going to need to do very well in that first debate in Denver.  That could be a make-or-break moment for his campaign.

The only way the Romney campaign can achieve all this is by accepting reality for what it is, not convincing itself anymore that everything is fine. His team must make a real change in the relationship they have with the voters they need to win in this election.  And like in life, the first sign of self-respect is taking real accountability for how they got in this mess and accepting the hard truth of what they need to do to succeed.  Let's see if they have hit rock bottom and can turn things around for the five events left.

How to Register to Vote Before Election Day

As Election Day, Nov. 6, nears, here is a quick rundown on how U.S. residents can register to vote.

To vote by mail, residents should use the National Mail Voter Registration form. North Dakota, Wyoming, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands don't accept the form, so residents should contact their local election offices for registration information.

The voter registration form can also be used to update information such as a name or address change or to register with a different political party.

U.S. residents can also apply to register to vote at state election offices, the Department of Motor Vehicles, public assistance offices, armed services recruitment centers, as well as public sites that been designated as voter registration agencies.

Some states also offer online voter registration but residents should contact their local registration offices for more information.

In August, Google launched its Online Voter Guide, which allows Google users to register to vote. Users can easily access TurboVote from the Google page and register to vote or vote by mail.

In addition, the Federal Voting Assistance Program is available for U.S. citizens living abroad and U.S. uniformed service members and their family members who seek to vote absentee.
